Summer WREN Backpacking Program

 

Backpack in the Wallowa Mountains’ spectacular Eagle Cap Wilderness during our Summer WREN Adventure Program.  Our trip will ignite your sense of adventure, whether you're new to backpacking or interested in improving your skills.  This course is designed for teenagers who want to learn about the plants, animals, geology, and cultural history of the Wallowa Mountains’ high country, while learning how to backpack.  The Summer WREN Backpacking Adventure is geared towards both the beginner and advanced backpacker interested in hiking and applied field research.

Summer WREN Backpacking Adventure

Dates: Saturday, July 10-16 and July 23-29

Ages: 13*-17 year olds (*must be 13 years old as of January 1, 2010)
Description: This week-long course is designed for teenagers who want to become familiar with the ecology of the Eagle Cap Wilderness while learning how to backpack. We’ll explore the basics of backpacking, including low-impact camping skills, how to use a stove and cook in the wilderness, set up a tent, pack a backpack, use a map and compass, and how to backpack safely. Students will spend the first day prepping gear and food, plus gaining the skills necessary to spend the following 6 days and 5 nights in the backcountry. This course also includes applied field research. Students participate in an US Forest Service Air Quality research project by collecting data and learning field research techniques.
Difficulty: ideal trip for the beginner in good physical shape: approximately 5-8 mile hiking days with moderate elevation gain.
Cost: $100/student (scholarships are available for Wallowa County youth- please inquire)
